Acoustic systems for buildings with a thermally activated concrete core

Special requirements such as for construction projects with solid, activated concrete core ceilings (building element cooling) or buildings erected to low-energy standards mean it is not possible to cover the ceiling surfaces with acoustics materials; in response we have developed an acoustics system that makes it possible to make use of the thermal mass of both the ceilings and walls.

The acoustic baffle MIKROPOR® AS VE consists of a broadband absorber based on melamine resin. The visible and rear sides as well as all edges are coated with a uniform acoustic fleece. A C-channel is provided on the top side of the baffle to attach the hanger.

Product description:

Special requirements such as for construction projects with solid, thermally activated concrete core ceilings (building element cooling) or buildings erected to low-energy standards mean it is not possible to cover the ceiling surfaces with acoustics materials; in response we have developed an acoustics system that makes it possible to make use of the thermal mass of both the ceilings and walls. Because in addition to air-conditioning aspects the room acoustics have an important role to play, the acoustic baffles are eminently suitable to achieve very good sound absorption. This construction design ensures a variable acoustic environment without impairing the function of the thermally active surfaces. The objective was to develop an ecologically safe system that it is possible to install in schools as well as in public buildings without any difficulty.

The acoustic baffle consists of a broadband absorber based on melamine resin. The visible and rear sides as well as all edges are coated with a uniform acoustic fleece. A C-channel is provided on the top side of the baffle to attach the hanger.

Surface:

Mikropor® AS VE
Acoustic fleece with matt, smooth and non-directional surface. The raw material is covered with fleece; in other words, there are no cavities visible. Coloured surface coating available if desired, including in special colours matched against a previous sample.

Care / refurbishing:
It is possible to clean localized soiling using a damp synthetic sponge or brush. Clean with a vacuum cleaner and brush. Refurbishable by spraying with Wilhelmi acoustic paint (WAF-R), without any loss of sound absorption properties.

Standard sizes:
Standard lengths: 1250 mm or 2500 mm
Standard heights: 200 mm, 300 mm and 400 mm
Custom formats on request.

Thickness:
40 mm

Building material class:
Core panel B1 (flame resistant) with fleece finish.

Acoustics:

The flexibility to determine the width as well as freely vary the arrangement of the baffles makes it possible to tailor the acoustic environment to suit the most widely varying demands.

Hanging

With thin wire hangers, wire length approx 2000 mm, longer lengths available on request, minimal hanging fixtures with screw hooks.

Special versions and property-specific solutions are possible on request.

1. Cleaning

  • Before cleaning with a damp cloth, carefully remove surface dust with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
  • It is possible to remove localized soiling such as fingerprints or trails of soiling close to air outlets using a firm, damp sponge together with a commercially available household cleaner or Moisture-Clean (available as a powder from Lahnau Akustik) in the respective recommended concentrations.
  • Then carefully wash down the cleaned surface with clean, clear water and dab dry with an absorbent cloth or paper (kitchen roll).
  • We recommended you test clean an inconspicuous area each time before cleaning.

Professional refurbishment must be carried out using Wilhelmi acoustic paint WAF-R 86 (special colours WAF-R 87).

  • Quantity used during refurbishment: 400-700 g/m² depending on the degree of soiling
  • Ensure the room temperature does not fall below 12 °C when applying the coating; the relative humidity should not exceed 70%.
  • Once applied immediately ensure the rooms are ventilated and dehumidified.

2.1 Refurbishment

If the acoustic ceiling has become heavily soiled after many years of normal use and can no longer be cleaned properly, it is possible to restore it to a condition virtually as good as new by applying a refurbishment spray.

When applied professionally in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions the acoustic absorbency of the wall or ceiling surface is not impaired. The refurbishment can be repeated several times, if required.

Under no circumstances should emulsion paints be applied to the surfaces using a brush or roller, otherwise the sound absorbing properties will be lost.

It is only possible to guarantee the acoustic characteristics will be retained by engaging a professional company that uses the appropriate coating machinery to professionally apply the refurbishment spray, e.g.,
